Safety and charging methods

An important aspect concerns the classification of the different charging methods according to the current legislation (IEC 61851). The alternating current charging systems from ABB use mode 3, which allows, in addition to the constant verification of the connection of the vehicle masses to the ground system, a communication between the charging system and the electric vehicle.
Direct current systems, on the other hand, offer a multistandard approach both in mode 3 and mode 4.

The IEC / CEI EN 61851-1 standard classifies the methods of connection to the electrical network of vehicles in four recharging modes.
The recharging modes 1, 2 and 3 refer to recharging in single-phase or three-phase alternating current at 230/400 V mains voltage, ie with battery charger on the vehicle.
Mode 4 refers to charging in direct current, ie with battery charger inside the station regulated by the vehicle via control signals.

Attached is an illustrative diagram for each charging method.
